The advance of flowering could cause extra-early peach and nectarine production to rise to 450 tons, which would enter the European market without competition.<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The advance of at least 15 days in the flowering of Cieza fruit trees due to the exceptionally warm weather that has occurred at the end of autumn and in this beginning of winter, can mean an increase in the extra-early production of peaches and nectarines, provided that the dreaded frosts of the months of January and February do not occur too sharply.<\/span><\/p>\n

The extraordinary climatic circumstances have caused between 70 and 80 % of the extra-early varieties to have already emerged, reaching 100% in some plantations, which has even forced them to proceed with thinning that normally does not begin until well into the month of March.<\/span><\/p>\n

The fruit would arrive in unbeatable conditions to the European market.<\/b><\/p>\n

In the event that these feared frosts did not occur, it seems clear that the fruit this year would be presented in the usual European markets on certain dates and therefore at exceptional prices, since there would be no competition from the surrounding countries. and the more than 450,000 kg could fill the shelves of European supermarkets, which would mean huge benefits for the sector.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThose 450,000 kilos of extra-early fruit represent around 15% of the municipality's overall production during the year.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

It is just a hypothesis since frost threatens.<\/b><\/p>\n

However, no one is aware that at the moment this is only a hypothesis, since as farmers indicate, the final result is always uncertain depending on the weather. For this reason, they call on the sector to be cautious.<\/span><\/p>\n

The local president of Coag, Manuel Mart\u00ednez, remembers that the full moons of January, February and March could cause frosts and end up destroying the early flowering of the fields, largely ruining this still early harvest. The first full moon occurred precisely this Sunday morning, specifically at 2:46 a.m. But if the hectares of trees pass these three tests, only the chance of a sporadic cold wave could seriously reduce the quality and quantity of the harvest.<\/span><\/p>\n

They prepare vegetable bales<\/b><\/p>\n

Not in vain, to prevent the possible action of cold on the shoots, farmers have this week arranged some of the mechanisms used to combat frost, including bales of plant material ready for burning. And times continue to be very bad for agricultural insurance, which currently only covers a tiny part of production, so a frost could plunge many farmers into a very serious economic situation.<\/span><\/p>\n

Precisely, the mayor of Cieza, Pascual Lucas, this week urged the Minister of Agriculture, Adela Mart\u00ednez-Cach\u00e1, to take the appropriate steps with the central government in order to recover agricultural insurance coverage. And the leader of Coag gave him a report about it. In addition, he called for opening lines of aid to the sector, so that it is easier for farmers to modernize their facilities and acquire machinery or tools necessary to minimize burning of pruning remains.<\/span><\/p>\n
