History of the Peach in Cieza
As is well known, Cieza is the leading municipality in world peach production. The tradition of growing and eating peaches in our area dates back to the period of Roman occupation, as shown by the plant remains from the 3rd century AD found in the La Serreta Cave-Sima.
According to the Report on the Origins of Peach Farming in Cieza, in the year 204 a group of people who were fleeing the civil wars unleashed in the Roman Empire, during the period known as “military anarchy”, settled in the Cave-Sink of La Serreta. Among the vestiges left by these settlers are some peach stones, which constitute the first trace of its cultivation in the Region of Murcia.
But seeds of this fruit were also found at the Islamic site of Siyâsa, dating from the 11th-13th centuries, during the Muslim domination of the Iberian Peninsula. The finds were made specifically in the cesspools of houses.
