The peach, the most produced fruit in Spain in 2014

Melocotones para exportación

It is clear that the peach is the king of fruits in Spain, not only by production volume but by quality recognized in the world, especially in Europe, where most of what is exported is directed.

In 2014, the fruit with the highest production volume was the peach, according to the data offered by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment (Magrama) in its statistics “Crop surfaces and production in 2014”.
Thus, peach production in Spain in 2014 was 931,067 tons, followed closely by nectarine, with a production of 642,573 tons.
Regarding the area allocated to crops, the peach tree occupied an area of 50,747 hectares, while the nectarine occupied 35,450 hectares, very far from the area allocated to citrus cultivation, which occupies an area 5 times larger (302,462 hectares), which It gives an idea of the great productivity of our peach trees.

The Spanish peach, the most competitive.

Both in terms of quality, production planning, and price, the Spanish peach is the most competitive in international markets, hence a large part of this production is destined for export, 368,827 tons, while the percentage of nectarine is even higher, around 73 %, a total of 467,336 tons

Thus, producer and exporter organizations express their satisfaction because peaches of good size and flavor continue to be sold at a good price, contrary to what happens in the case of France, whose peaches are more expensive and have less sugar.

The price of Italian peaches, the big problem

Regarding the price offered for peaches, the main problem arises with the one originating from Italy, which is “straining” prices in Germany and the Greeks do the same in Eastern Europe, thus causing the problems of low prices. They are similar to the entire sector.
