The Regional Assembly supports a special electricity rate for irrigation

The Regional Assembly of Murcia yesterday adopted an agreement that could be very beneficial for farmers and that, if it comes to fruition, would mean a reduction in the electricity bill for some 500,000 irrigators.

The agreement, which was approved unanimously, involves applying an exclusive formula for irrigation that allows them to have an electricity supply contract adapted to this specific type of consumption (almost all annual consumption is concentrated on very specific dates), similar to the hourly discrimination rate to which all private users can benefit.

The regional deputy Jesús Cano, promoter of the proposal, wanted to highlight the strategic value of irrigation for the economy, which not in vain represents a total of 3.2 million hectares of irrigation (16 percent of the total cultivated land) and that generate 55 percent of the country's final agricultural production.
